Connected Home

The Connected Home has emerged as the front line in defining the broadband subscriber experience. Formerly an area that was seen by service providers as beyond the line of demarcation, it now is a natural extension of the access network and the intersection between the proliferating Internet of Things

Realizing the Promise of the Connected Home with User Services Platform

The IoT enhanced Connected Home presents service providers with unparalleled opportunities and challenges. Now is the time to rethink how the broadband experience is delivered and measured in the home and business. With over 1 billion deployments globally, look to the evolution of TR-069 for a clear path forward. That evolution – TR-369 or User Service Platform (USP) – has been designed and built by the service providers and vendors of Broadband Forum by leveraging the experience of deployment managed services through complex network environments.

Management of the Connected Home

What is USP?

The User Services Platform is a standardized protocol for managing, monitoring, upgrading, and controlling connected devices. USP allows service providers, consumer electronics manufacturers, and end users to:

  • Perform lifecycle management of consumer connected devices
  • Enable IoT and consumer electronics upgradability for critical security patches
  • Bootstrap and configure newly installed or purchased devices and virtual services
  • Let customer support monitor and troubleshoot connected devices, services, and home network links
  • Easily map the home network to control service quality and monitor threats
  • Securely control IoT, smart home, and smart networking functions locally or from the Cloud
  • Enable multi-tenant (i.e., multi-stakeholder) management and control

USP represents the natural evolution of the Broadband Forum’s CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP), commonly known as TR-069. It uses an expanded version of the Device:2 Data Model to represent device operations (firmware upgrades, reboots, etc.), network interfaces, and service functions (IoT functions, VoIP, etc.).

Broadband Forum has also recently announced the public release of its open source USP Agent. The latest development to USP gives vendors a code base to either integrate into their devices or use as a reference implementation as they utilize User Services Platform (USP). OB-USP-Agent will facilitate USP deployment and enable faster time-to-market for USP-based innovation and solutions. It also paves the way for large-scale operator deployments and lucrative new revenue streams while greatly limiting the risks associated with stunted ecosystems. OB-USP Agent is the latest deployment to USP which evolves the TR-069 standard by using the same data models to build a network of controllers and agents to allow applications to manipulate service elements. As a result, service providers, consumer electronics manufacturers and end-users can securely manage connected devices, carry out upgrades, for example, for critical security updates, and onboard new devices. Remote monitoring and troubleshooting of connected devices, services and home network links is also enabled, improving customer support.

TR-069

TR-069 is at the heart of a profound industry evolution to holistic broadband. For the first time providers have a real opportunity to operate and manage the entire access and premises compute-network ecosystem. In development by Forum members are new data models, user services platform, wireless-wireline convergence, wi-fi performance initiatives, virtualization projects such as TR-317 (see below and on the TR-317 page), TR-359 the Forum’s framework for virtualization and new practical implementation initiatives such as Open Broadband.
