BBF.247 GPON ONU Certification

Catalyzing the mass deployment of fiber access services globally

BBF-247 is part of the global widely accepted industry standards that ensures multi-vendor interoperability, it is a critical program that delivers choice and flexibility for service providers and broadband consumers.

A cornerstone of The Broadband Forum BBF.247 is to publish open standards, certification and test plans that give the ability to choose from differing network equipment (OLTs) and the fiber termination device inside the users building (ONUs). Enabling the fiber broadband deployments and future fiber service upgrades realize true multi-vendor flexibility. Securing the growth of fiber broadband, irrespective of supply chain challenges and ever evolving needs for service differentiation.

In 2010, the Broadband Forum established the Fiber Access Networks (FAN) Work Area, which has a close relationship to the sister working groups at FSAN. FAN is focused on defining the requirements and data models for deploying Broadband Forum network architectures in fiber access to accelerate deployments and ensuring interoperability.

In addition to interoperability the Forum’s latest FAN related initiatives include architecture and technical requirements for PON-based mobile backhaul, Multi-wavelength PON protocol specifications and PON NETCONF/YANG data model specifications.

All the work to develop technical specifications related to Optical Access Nodes and associated test plans for conformance and inter-vendors interoperability takes place at (or is reviewed at) our quarterly meetings-so you know exactly where to go to ensure your requirements are met and your products are part of these industry critical global plugfests and certification program.

BBF.247 GPON Certification Program has greatly supported the success of GPON technologies and deployments. It has helped the industry expedite fiber network rollout, this global BBF.247 GPON ONU Certification program helps pave the way for swift expansion of superfast broadband and the development of new technologies. It is based on test plans developed by the Broadband Forum and work undertaken jointly with FSAN (Full Service Access Network).

BBF.247 certification program addresses a variety of ONUs; testing various VLAN profiles and functionality. In April 2020, the program was expanded to include XG-PON and XGS-PON 10 Gig PON technologies.

BBF.247 certification program is open to all GPON, XG-PON and XGS-PON ONU products with Ethernet Interfaces and is based on the Broadband Forum’s TP-247/IR-247 test plan. It tests conformance to TR-156 and TR-280 using OMCI as defined in the ITU G.988, which are the most critical standards to interoperable implementations.
The Broadband Forum has reviewed and authorized the following independent testing agency to administer the approved BBF.247 tests and assess eligibility of products for the Broadband Forum Certification. For more information or to schedule testing, please contact the laboratory directly:

    • Since 2009, the BBF has collaborated with FSAN (Full Service Access Network) on interoperability testing plugfests on the physical, TC and upper layers for GPON, with FSAN leading on the first two and BBF on the last.
